Our groups Introduction/Sources

Population: 485

This introduction will provide a quick glimpse on our group’s enthusiasm as we embark on a journey through Michael Perry literature. Coming into the book each group member has a different perspective and interest level. Kenzie choose to read this book because she enjoys smaller stories that collectively have a bigger and deeper meaning. She looks forward to discovering this through analytically voyaging deep into the pages. Stephen wrote this book down as his first choice due to the setting. Being able to relate to the surroundings is an aspect of the book which he most looks forward reading. Mitchell is reading this book due to the action and the excitement of firefighting. He enjoys a good action piece. Finally Moira, choose this book above all the rest because the blurb on the back caught her eye, and reading the summary sparked her reading “bug”.

Being that all of the members of our group have grown up in the Midwest – more specifically in the northern Midwest – we are able to relate to the values of small town America and the family traditions of growing up on the farm. We however, did not have any pervious knowledge pertaining to the book nor the author. We also didn’t have any specific knowledge regarding firefighting tactics and EMT basics.

One bias, we as a group can attributed to the book, as well as a common misconception shared by many, would be that a small town such as New Auburn – where the book is set – is populated by a myriad of uneducated farmers who are out of touch with mainstream society. Readers could also assume that little is occurring in a small town however, we hope, and believe based off the information on the back cover, that this book will provide a plurality of counter examples, to this particular misconstruction of small town USA.

Our group, as a whole, feels that we are open individuals and so we accepted the book, and we are thrilled at the opportunity to embrace new knowledge and viewpoints.
